Accuracy is the whole point of this site. A leasehold guide that is out of date or wrong is worse than no guide at all, because people make real decisions based on what they read here. This page explains where our information comes from and how we make sure it is right.
The sources we rely on
We work from primary sources wherever possible, in roughly this order of priority:
- The legislation itself, published on legislation.gov.uk, including the relevant Acts and the regulations made under them.
- Official guidance on GOV.UK and from public bodies such as the Leasehold Advisory Service (LEASE).
- Decisions of the First-tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) and higher courts, where they set out how the law works in practice.
- Guidance from recognised professional bodies, used to explain established practice.
We treat news articles and other websites as signposts to look into, never as the source we cite. If a fact matters, we trace it back to the original.
How we handle figures and dates
Money figures, thresholds and legal limits change, so we state the date or the period they apply to, and we name the source. When a rule depends on timing, such as when a lease was granted, we make that condition clear rather than giving a single answer that only applies to some readers.
How we handle the law that is changing
Leasehold reform is happening in stages, and a lot of what is written online describes changes that have been announced but are not yet in force. We are careful to separate what is law today from what has been promised or is still going through Parliament, and we say plainly which is which.
Our review process
Before a guide is published, it is checked for accuracy by [Author name]. After publication, guides are reviewed on a regular cycle and again whenever the law changes. Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed so you can judge how current it is.
If you spot a mistake
We would rather know. If something here looks wrong or out of date, please tell us through our contact page, and see our corrections policy for how we handle it. Our wider approach is set out in our editorial standards.
